Rotterdam Climate Initiative
The Rotterdam Climate Initiative is the climate programme of the Municipality of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam, Deltalinqs, and DCMR Environmental Protection Agency Rijnmond. The Rotterdam Climate Initiative creates a movement in which government, organizations, companies, knowledge institutes, and citizens collaborate to achieve a fifty per cent reduction of CO2 emissions, adapt to climate change, and promote the economy in the Rotterdam region.
The expected growth of the city and port of Rotterdam offers new economic chances in the future for the processing of CO2 by organisations, industry and port. Rotterdam is aiming to be the World Capital of CO2- free energy.
Stimulating the use of new technologies and finding practical and measurable solutions are pivotal aspects of this approach which is part of the international Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI). In 2008, during the World Port Climate Conference that took place in Rotterdam, CCI marked out Rotterdam as ‘World Capital for CCS’.
Rotterdam Climate Proof
Rotterdam Climate Proof is the climate adaptation programme of the City of Rotterdam, and is part of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.
Climate adaptation and spatial development are inextricably intertwined in Rotterdam. This approach allows urban planners to create designs that effectively address the issue of climate change. Adaptation to climate change is more than just a necessity for Rotterdam. Perhaps even more importantly, it offers an economic opportunity. This approach is characteristic of Rotterdam Climate Proof. Gaining knowledge and experience fast in combining water management and spatial planning will allow the corporate sector to build a powerful competitive advantage.
The Rotterdam Climate Proof approach is based on three pillars:
- Knowledge: Rotterdam is developing into a leading national and international water knowledge and climate city
- Actions: Rotterdam is developing into a global testing ground in the field of delta technology and adaptive building
- Exposure: Rotterdam is an inspiring example to delta cities around the world
