Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is a key location in continental Europe. Enjoying a central location, two major Sea Port complexes within a 50 km radius, good international rail links and close proximity to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam has always been a major transit hub for people, goods, capital and services to and from the European continent.

The Amsterdam Area is a centre of international trade, combining transport and logistics expertise with an in-depth knowledge of all the relevant European markets. 174 different nationalities live and work together in harmony in Amsterdam in a multilingual, multicultural, tolerant, consensus-oriented, and politically and culturally neutral society. Amsterdammers and their neighbours excel at creating and embracing cross-border ideas and concepts and are always ready to adapt to other business processes and cultures.
Living and working in the Amsterdam Area is an attractive prospect with high-quality international schools, large expat communities, a manageable cost of living, and attractive and affordable (and safe) places to live. Expats appreciate the unique work-life balance and tend to stay longer than in other European countries.
More than 1,600 foreign companies have offices in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and research shows that non-Dutch companies with a presence here grow faster, create more added value, and innovate more successfully than comparable Dutch companies.

  • Logistical Performance

4. Results

Initial Case Study settings:

All decision factors are equally weighted.

The results:

When all location factors are equally weighted, the top ranking locations are Antwerp, Dublin, Copenhagen, Brussels and Geneva.  Berlin, Munich, Paris and Milan are ranked near the bottom – primarily because of labour market flexibility and the KOF Globalisation Index results. Surprisingly, London is ranked near the bottom.

The good performance of the Belgian cities should not be surprising. In spite of political challenges, the country is at the center of European integration and has an excellent track record in attracting foreign direct investment. Although London is traditionally a European headquarters location, this study reflects the increasing importance of European headquarters being located on continental Europe.

For review:

For many companies, the compelling most compelling factors that impact a headquarter location decision are socio-political stability, labour market flexibility and the ease of doing business. When these factors are heavily weighted, the top ranking locations are Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Zurich and Geneva. If corporations place high value on these factors, that would explain the prevalence of London as a headquarter location. Global Arena methodology allows you to select the criteria that are most important for your situation.
