Ghent is a historic city, yet at the same time a contemporary one. The modern daily life of the city’s active inhabitants plays itself out against a gorgeous historical backdrop. In Ghent, they live, work and enjoy life over and over again each day. A couple enjoys the peace of an authentic beguinage. Parents and children stroll through the traffic-free streets of the city centre. A tourist snaps a photo of the three towers, as so many have before, but just a little differently. A businessman with an iPhone walks along the distinctive Graslei, crosses the Lys and enters his stylish four-star hotel hiding behind a medieval facade. Dozens of pavement cafes invite you to discover Ghent’s specialities. The sun is reflected in the many waterways. The city is alive and bids you welcome.

Ghent Testimonial: Louis Verbeke, Chairman, Vlerick Management School

"The Vlerick Management School which now has campuses in Ghent, Leuven, St-Petersburg and Beijing was born in Ghent. Its nervous center is still there. Its international development was strongly supported by the mayor of Ghent and the Governor of the Province. Our international students in particular find Ghent an exciting and beautiful place. Ghent and the School is an old love affair which is going from strength to strength."

4. Results

Initial Case Study settings:

All decision factors are equally weighted.

The results:

When all location factors are equally weighted, the top ranking locations are Antwerp, Dublin, Copenhagen, Brussels and Geneva.  Berlin, Munich, Paris and Milan are ranked near the bottom – primarily because of labour market flexibility and the KOF Globalisation Index results. Surprisingly, London is ranked near the bottom.

The good performance of the Belgian cities should not be surprising. In spite of political challenges, the country is at the center of European integration and has an excellent track record in attracting foreign direct investment. Although London is traditionally a European headquarters location, this study reflects the increasing importance of European headquarters being located on continental Europe.

For review:

For many companies, the compelling most compelling factors that impact a headquarter location decision are socio-political stability, labour market flexibility and the ease of doing business. When these factors are heavily weighted, the top ranking locations are Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Zurich and Geneva. If corporations place high value on these factors, that would explain the prevalence of London as a headquarter location. Global Arena methodology allows you to select the criteria that are most important for your situation.
