BZ Barcelona Innovation Zone

BZ Barcelona Innovation Zone is an ambitious project intended to respond to the industrial and business needs of the 21st century. Its location is unbeatable: with a direct link to El Prat international airport and the port of Barcelona, as well as a connection with the main road and railway networks. There is also a direct link to the future intermodal station of Baix Llobregat, and with the future metro lines 2 and 9.

In 2004, the Consorci reached an agreement with carmaker SEAT to buy back 50 hectares of land in the Zona Franca Industrial Estate which it had been leasing. The gradual recuperation of the land culminated in December 2007 with the return of the final plot. The cost of the operation was 140 million euros.

Three business uses have been identified for this land: industrial technology, the food industry and cultural activities. These all require an approach to business planning and urban development that will add value and convert the area into a place where economic activity and technology can meet and thrive.

Food Axis. The aim is to strengthen the food group led by Mercabarna, and to facilitate the introduction of innovative food companies working on an international level, which also use technological infrastructures and advanced services in the production processes and contribute to improvement in food products for the benefit of consumers.
