Region Skane
Region Skåne was established on 1st January 1999 through the merger of the County Council of Kristianstad and the County Council of Malmö as well as the health and medical services of the City of Malmö. Other responsibilities were also transferred from the Regional association of Skåne.
The headquarters of Region Skåne's management are situated in Kristianstad. The highest decision-making political organ of Region Skåne is the Regional Council with its 149 members who are elected every four years by the inhabitants of Skåne in a general election. The first election was held in 1998. The Regional Board, appointed by the Regional Council, governs, develops and co-ordinates the administration of Region Skåne's activities.
Responsibilities of Region Skåne
Skåne is a united county with Region Skåne acting as its co-ordinator in many important issues of regional development. Its work lies within the areas of health, medical and dental services, trade and industry development, the environment, promotion of investment, town and infrastructure planning, public transport and culture.
Political work is focused on creating good conditions and opportunities for Skåne to become an attractive region in which to work, establish businesses, study and live. The development programme, “Vitality in Skåne”, which was adopted in 1999, states goals and strategies for the development of Skåne. Regional development work is carried out by stimulating commitment, initiating and co-ordinating services which will contribute to Skåne's growth, attractiveness, strength and balance. Co-operation stretches beyond the boundaries of the region, particularly into Denmark and the countries around the Baltic.
