Located in the center of China's Pacific coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Shanghai is the China's largest economiccenter.
According to the most recent comprehensive city development plans, by 2020 Shanghai will have essentially completed its transformation into a modern, international metropolis, as well as an international economic, financial, commercial and transportation center. The Shanghai Municipal Govemment has approved an industrial development plan that gives "Priority to Developing a Modern Service Industry and Priority to Developing Advanced Manufacturing".
Shanghai' s economy is rapidly increasing. In 1990, the per capita GDP broke 1000 USD for the first time. In 1995, the per capita GDP reached 2000 USD. In 1999, the per capita GDP stepped on the stage of 3000 USD and in 2006 it had a leap to 7189 USD, which was similar to the level of a medium-standard developed country. In 2007 the GDP of Shanghai was 1.2 billion RMB. The proportion of the tertiary, second, and first industry was 51.7%, 47.3% and 1%. The cargo volume of Shanghai Port reached 560 million tons, ranked among the top three in the world for 3 consecutive years. The containers volume was 26.15 million containers, which ranked the second in the world.
In 2007, 4206 foreign investment projects were approved. The contractual volume increased by 2% to 14.87 billion USD. The paid-in capital increased by 11.4% to 7.92 billion USD, 67.1% among the paid-in capital, about 5.32 billion USD was attracted to the tertiary industry. By the end of 2007, 48753 foreign investment projects had been approved in total with the investment volume of 129.41 billion USD. In the end of 2007, there were 593 multinational corporate head quarters in Shanghai, among them 184 are regional headquarters, 165 are holding companies, and 244 are R&D centers.
